Johann Lorenz Bach [38] (Composer, Kantor, Copyist, Bach's Pupil)

Born: September 10, 1695 - Schweinfurt, Thuringia, Germany
Died: December 14, 1773 - Lahm im Itzgrund, Germany

Johann Lorenz Bach [38] was son of Johann Valentin Bach [21] (town musician in Schweinfurt, cousin of J.S. Bach [24]). He studied with his father; and in 1712/1713 visited the Lyceum in Ohrdruf. He was a pupil of J.S. Bach in Weimar from 1713 to 1717 and one of his copyists there. From 1718 he was Kantor and organist in Lahm im Itzgrund. An organ fugue in D by him is extant (Orgelwerke der Familie Bach, 1967, p.31); the. manuscript of the prelude belonging to it (incipit in BJb. xxxvii, 1949-50, p.108) was lost in World War II.

In an unsuccessful application for the Kantor office in Wertheim in 1717, Johann Lorenz Bach mentioned staying with J.S. Bach in Weimar in connection with his musical education. He can also be traced as a writer in J.S. Bach's Weimar sheet music as Anon. Weimar 2.
